What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, was enacted by the U.S. government in 1996 to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. The Act ensures that individuals’ sensitive information is protected while allowing the flow of health information needed to provide high-quality care.
